An application from Renaissance Land for the construction of 10 data centres on the former Blyth Power station has been approved by Northumberland Council.

The £2.5bn Eastern Green Link 1 project was given the green light in November and will see a 196km high-voltage, bi-directional subsea electricity cable laid between Hawthorn Pit in County Durham and Torness in East Lothian, Scotland.

One year on from the companies forming a joint venture to develop the West Hartford land into up to 1m sq ft of commercial and industrial space, plans have been unveiled at a meeting with North East Mayor Kim McGuinness. 

The North East, the North West, and Scotland have been highlighted as areas likely to secure support for housing the hubs, with briefings noting the emerging technologies could regenerate former industrial sites. 

Godwin Developments has secured permission from North Tyneside Council to create the city’s largest rapid charging EV hub in Holystone Park, alongside a coffee drive-thru and a shop. 

Energy Optimisation Solutions wants to build the development on a three-acre plot at the 2,500-acre Teesworks site on the south bank of the River Tees.  

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has outlined the route to 100% clean electricity generation by the end of the decade – the North stands ready to benefit from the strategy.

Working with Technip Industries and GE Vernova, the contractor has received notice to proceed from NZT Power, triggering a £1.5bn project that combines a gas-fired power station with carbon capture.

Energy company EDF has committed a further £1.3bn investment into its five nuclear power stations in the UK, increasing the operational life of four facilities in the process.
