Stack Middlesbrough closes on completion

Contractor Abbey Group has winched into place the first of 25 shipping containers that will house the leisure destination, where an early December opening is the target.

Stack Middlesbrough, the third group venue to open this year after operations at St James’ Park Newcastle and Lincoln, is being created at the undercroft where the A66 flyover meets Exchange Square.

It will be home to five street food outlets, three bars, a central plaza with seating and a stage for live entertainment.

Neill Winch, chief executive, said: “We are confident STACK will be a huge asset to Middlesbrough and add a positive and additional dimension to the local leisure scene.

“There was a lot of additional work and infrastructure to put in place which hadn’t been originally anticipated but we are grateful to the council and combined authority who have carried out the works to allow us to use this site.

“Whilst there has been a delay we’re sure everyone will agree that it was worth the wait when we open.”

Lined up for 2025 are Stack Newcastle at the city’s Worswick Chambers, part of the Pilgrim’s Quarter regeneration masterplan, with other North East schemes currently in development at Durham, Bishop Auckland, and Whitley Bay.

Further afield, plans are moving forward in Carlisle, Northampton, Manchester, Leeds, Wigan and Sheffield, on a plot next to the O2 Academy.
