Plans in for Newcastle hotel

A developer wants to build an eight-storey hotel on Howard Street, east of the city centre.

Working with Mario Michella Architects, the firm headed by Gulfam Ulhaq has submitted plans with Newcastle City Council for a project that would involve demolition of an existing, closed restaurant building – the Dadyal – and its replacement by a new-build hotel.

Bradley Hall, Tim Speed Consulting and DACS have also advised.

Thirty two guest bedrooms are planned, including a two-bedroom penthouse at the top floor level.

The developer’s belief is that the 2-4 Howard Street location, at the junction with Gibson Street, is ideally placed for a hotel serving the Quayside area’s hospitality market and visitor economy.

The site is a near-neighbour to Staybridge Suites, and sits a few minutes’ walk north of the St Ann’s Quay site currently being developed by hotel group Dakota. There are also various purpose-built student accommodation blocks in the area, with Unite and True Students among the operators.

NCC has now validated the proposals, which can be viewed on the local authority planning portal with the reference 2024/1725/01/DET.
