Next step for Blyth cultural hub
A priority project for Northumberland County Council, the 24,000 sq ft cinema and event space heads to planning committee recommended for approval.
The development of the hub is the centrepiece in the redevelopment of Blyth marketplace and St Mary’s church gardens, which itself is the flagship project within Energising Blyth, a suite of projects for which NCC has secured government backing.
DPP is the planning advisor on the project, with architect FaulknerBrowns the designer of the cultural hub. The extensive public realm parts of the scheme have been designed by LDA.
The professional team also includes Eco North, Civic Engineers, CLB, JH Partners, Apex Acoustics and Urban Movement.
Northumberland’s strategic planning committee will meet on 4 July to assess the project, with officers recommending approval.
DPP is seeking full permission for a scheme that includes a three-screen cinema, ‘creative play’ facilities, café, and a 200-capacity event space, along with public realm works to the wider market place and Church Gardens, plus the refurbishment of the existing public toilets.
As outlined by planning officers, Market Square has been regarded as an under-used space and the proposal seeks to bring vibrancy back to the area, stimulating wider regeneration. Both Town Deal and Future High Street funding have been secured for Blyth’s town centre renewal.
A consultation was held in November, with plans being filed in March. No objections have been made by statutory consultees or by neighbouring businesses or individuals.
The plans can be viewed on the NCC planning portal with the reference 23/00618/CCD.
