More time needed for Washington extra-care development

A stalled 100-home extra-care development has applied to Sunderland Council for an extension to planning permission granted in 2022.

Esh Construction and Gladglider Projects obtained permission to build a three-storey, 84-unit extra-care home in October 2022, as well as 13 bungalows on land west of Moorway and south of Havannah Road.

At a meeting today, the council will give the developers an extension until 25 April to include a legal provision for affordable housing and submit an updated ecology report or, the report said, the application will be rejected.

The project team includes SPA Architects and BH Planning & Design.

Despite the afore-mentioned need for affordable housing to be confirmed, the planning statement for the project notes that both the extra-care housing and the bungalows will be owned, run and maintained by social landlord The Riverside Group.

It says the homes will all be available to rent or via shared ownership, with all rent levels set at affordable housing levels to be agreed with the council.

The triangular-shaped site is described as “effectively an island” in planning documents, as it is bounded by main roads to the east and south.
