MIPIM | Gainford unveils £130m New Bridge project

The former Premier Inn on New Bridge Street will be transformed into a 29-storey residential development, a 150-bed hotel, bars, and restaurants, designed by FaulknerBrowns Architects.

The residential tower will comprise 18o homes with a gross internal floorspace area of 210,000 sq ft, and will sit alongside the hotel, above the ground floor leisure and retail areas.

The hotel will have a GIFA of around 100,000 sq ft, while the leisure offering will include an 11,000 sq ft gym and three restaurants.

Plans for the two-acre site are in pre-planning, and is located on the eastern fringe of the city centre.

Plans unveiled at MIPIM in a panel discussion at the InvestNewcastle stand show how the New Bridge project will regenerate a key area of Newcastle, alongside the East Pilgrim Street development.

Pedestrian links and a gateway to Market Street are included in the designs, which will link through to the HMRC building and other revitalised areas, such as Northumberland Street.

Gainford also owns the Vermont hotel, Aveika, and Livello in Newcastle, and has not yet decided whether it will operate the New Bridge hotel.

Speaking at the event, Imran Khaliq, director of Gainford, said: Gainford is championing Newcastle on the world stage at MIPIM and is committed to Newcastle’s global ambitions…

“We believe in the power of public and private partnership to shape vibrant, sustainable local communities through our major regeneration projects and hospitality ventures.”
