Kingsway Square opens as Bishop Auckland gears up
Work has been completed on a pedestrianised area and car park, part of the County Durham town’s ongoing regeneration.
With a major upswing in visitor numbers to the town centre expected through December, parking will be free for the Christmas Town event, running until year-end.
Kingsway Square is the result of a collaboration between Durham County Council, The Auckland Project and other private developers.
Made possible by the Future High Streets Fund, Kingsway Square offers car parking for 70 cars, electric vehicle charging, cycle storage, ambient lighting and outdoor seating, as well as a play space.
David Land, interim chief executive of regeneration charity The Auckland Project says: “Kingsway Square has revitalised prime space in the heart of Bishop Auckland into a safe place to park, relax and play for both local people and visitors. We hope those enjoying the attractions and events in Bishop take advantage of the free parking until the end of the year.”
Around £53m has been levered into Bishop Auckland from the Stronger Towns Fund, providing £33m, and Future High Streets Fund. Work started in April on the £12m Kingsway Square work.
Cllr Elizabeth Scott, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for economy and partnerships, said the completion “marks a key milestone in our ongoing regeneration of Bishop Auckland” and would help unlock further investment.
A secondary phase of the Kingsway Square development will see the completion of surrounding mixed-use retail and residential developments, including buildings of historical importance, such as the Masonic Hall, which ius being converted into apartments, an art space and offices.
This is such good work but what is happening with the run down public houses in our gorgeous market place… they are an eye sore and people come to bishop but go to Durham or Darlington to dine or find accommodation.
