Heron’s Yard acquisition completed
Developer Downing has concluded a deal to enable the final phase of its Downing Plaza project in Newcastle city centre.
The 14-storey scheme, located on Heber Street, will see 411 student bedspaces delivered, across 293 standalone studios and 118 cluster beds.
Downing secured planning for the scheme in June 2023. SimpsonHaugh is the architect.
Heron’s Yard will complete Downing’s work on the Plaza development, on the site of the former Scottish & Newcastle brewery site.
The wider scheme also includes 120,000 sq ft. of teaching space for Newcastle University Business School, more than 1,800 student bedrooms, a 183-room hotel, and extensive retail space.
Heron’s Yard will include a landscaped courtyard, and amenity spaces spread throughout the building. BREEAM Excellent status is the aim.
Downing is looking to expand its PBSA portfolio across key university cities, it said.
Martin Fenlon, associate projects director at Downing, said: “We are thrilled to have acquired this prime site in Newcastle to complete our vision for Downing Plaza. This is the latest in a line of key strategic acquisitions for us as we continue to expand our portfolio across the country.
“Newcastle is a thriving university city with a rich cultural heritage and a vibrant student community. We are excited to continue to contribute to the city’s growth and provide students with stylish and inspiring places to call home.”
