Newcastle Building Society advances flagship city centre branch

Gateshead-based Arcas Building Solutions has been appointed as lead contractor on the refurbishment of the grade two-listed building on the corner of Grainger Street and Monument.

The Newcastle office of Silverstone Building Consultancy is appointed as project manager for the scheme.

Plans include 8,400 sq ft of the five-storey building being fully redeveloped, with more than a third of the space made open to the public for the first time in decades.

As well as the NBS branch on the ground floor, there will be office and event space on the upper levels.

The lower ground floor will be renovated into an area for use by local charities and organisations.

Built in the 1830s, the building has been home to retail brands such as Boots and French Connection, which vacated the premises last year. It is now part of the Newcastle Central Conservation Area.

The Monument branch is due to open early in 2025.
