Demolition set for derelict Sunderland site

DPP Planning has applied for permission on behalf of the University of Sunderland to demolish the former educational building after previous planning approval for the site lapsed.

A proposed date of January 2025 has been noted.

No plans for future use on the 1.4 acre site have been submitted yet.

Forster Building at Chester Road was given the green light to be demolished back in September 2020, with Sunderland Council also approving plans for the construction of two buildings containing 260 student bedrooms and retail units on the ground floors.

Jaspia was the developer on the scheme and a three-year limit was set on the approval.

Now, Billinghurst George & Partners carried out the recent demolition assessment and concluded that the five-storey concrete structure is safe to proceed with.

The site is to be cleared and left at ground level, with the car park and landscaped areas unaltered. BGP’s instructions are to leave the site fenced off in a safe condition.
