Input sought on vision for Gresham
Middlesbrough Development Corporation is working with iMpeC and Buccleuch Property on repositioning the district, with living options for young professionals and students to the fore.
Consultation has been launched today on the proposals for Gresham. The first public event will be held, while the online consultation site is now live at this link.
The professional team includes Corstorphine & Wright as architect and lead consultant, Turner & Townsend as project and cost manager, BNP Paribas Real Estate as commercial agent, planner Lichfields, engineering consultant WSP, and landscape architect Node. Petite Agency and Resolution are handling communications.
As set out by the partners, “a high-quality mixed-use scheme is being lined up which will see a new housing offer of professionally managed, purpose-built rental accommodation which will appeal to a range of people including young people and students”.
The partners continue: “The proposals will offer high-quality accommodation for around 1,000 people with the aim of attracting and retaining talent in Middlesbrough, supporting the growth of Teesside University and boosting the economic rejuvenation of both Gresham and the wider town.”
A hotel, green spaces and improved pedestrian links to the university campus are all included.
Planning determination for phase one this winter is the aim, with phase two to be put into motion next year, and phase one delivery starting next summer and completing in spring 2028.
At Place North East’s recent Emerging Development Hotspots event, Middlesbrough Council’s Richard Horniman spoke of the desire to make more of the existing built environment close to the town centre, and to improve the residential and lifestyle offer in line with expectations from companies in the area’s booming gaming sector.
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen who chairs the Middlesbrough Development Corporation, said that “for too long, Gresham has been a byword for failure” and that “now we are grasping the heart of Middlesbrough with both hands”. He described the developers on board as “industry experts with a brilliant vision of what is to come”.
Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke added: “Creating the right kind of housing that will attract people to live in our town centre is in the best interests of everyone in Middlesbrough”.
