60-bed hotel proposed for Bishop Auckland

Work would include the demolition of the derelict Queens Head, Postchaise, and Monaco buildings on the north side of the town’s Market Place.

Part-funded with £3.1m from the Stronger Towns Fund, the rest of the project would be funded by The Auckland Project, a regeneration charity.

The not-for-profit has worked with Historic England and Durham County Council on designs for the hotel, which would add to the town’s wider investment plan and has the potential to create more than 95 hotel jobs and 65 construction roles.

TAP is looking for public feedback on the proposals, and is holding a drop-in event at 42 Market Place, Bishop Auckland, on Thursday 10 April from 3-7pm.

David Land, chief executive of The Auckland Project, says: “We believe the proposed scheme is the best use of space in the town.

“Through careful planning with organisations such as Durham County Council and Historic England, we are confident that the development will bring economic and social benefits to local residents and business. We encourage people to take a look at the plans.”
